WARNING AND DISCLAIMER:
Based on reviewing the details of this extraction
of dextromethorphan from Coricidin, for the most part I think most would do well to avoid it. The practical problem
with this extraction is that DXM HBr is reasonably soluble in cold water. As much as 1.5%. This would mean that if
someone used 30 ml of cold water to do this Coricidin extraction, this could mean a loss of up to 450 mg of dextromethorphan.
Thus, unless one is willing to accept losing large amounts of DXM in the extraction, this really isn't an ideal technique.
I am hoping that I can come up with a better Coricidin extraction technique. Best possibility likely would involve
finding a better solvent than cold water, which has the problem that both chlorpheniramine maleate and dextromethorphan
HBr are reasonably soluble in it. A solvent where only one was soluble, and not the other would be desirable.
Dextromethorphan Extraction from Coricidin Cough & Cold
BACKGROUND: Dextromethorphan
Hydrobromide (hereafter referred to as DXM HBr) is a common over-the-counter antitussive (cough suppressant) which
replaced codeine in the early 1960's because of concerns over abuse of cough syrups by down and out
junkies. However, DXM HBr was later discovered to have recreational effects, albeit ones not as universally enjoyable
as codeine and other opiates. It is a member of the drug class dissociative anaesthetics, and has psychedelic effects
similar to Ketamine ("Special K") or Phencyclidine (PCP). The most common venue for recreational DXM
abuse is the drinking of cough syrup, which many people find extremely unpleasant. Until recently, Drixoral
CoughCaps, which contained nothing but DXM HBr (30mg) per tablet, were widely available and the best source of recreational
DXM around. They were taken off the market, allegedly because of poor sales, but probably because
of abuse. A new product, Coricidin Cough & Cold, appeared on the market. Coricidin Cough & Cold (CC&C)
contains, in each tablet, 30mg DXM HBr and 4mg of the antihistamine chlorpheniramine maleate (CPM). Coricidin Cough
& Cold tablets became popular recreationally, as they are much easier to take than cough syrup. However, overdosage
of CPM (on the order of anywhere from 12-300mgs) can cause severe anticholinergic side effects in susceptible persons,
and there *HAVE* been confirmed deaths due to it's use. CPM is highly contraindicated in such large
doses, and even though most individuals can handle a medium dose of it, individual susceptibility varies widely, and
even from use to use by one person, the user is rolling the metaphorical dice every time it is used.
OBJECTIVE: To, given a supply of Coricidin Cough & Cold (30mg DXM HBr, 4mg CPM), yield a portion of
usable DXM HBr reasonably equal to the amount in the pills, discarding all or effectively all CPM.
- MATERIALS - Cold water Coricidin Cough & Cold pills Stirring instrument Crushing instrument
(a heavy book or board works fine, if you have a sturdy plate to collect the powder in) Fine-grained cloth for extraction
(test it out with flour) Petroleum Ether (optional -- for creating a more refined product) Gelcaps (optional --
for consuming product in a way that won't make your stomach turn)
- PROCEDURE -
(1)
Obtain a sizable quantity of Coricidin Cough & Cold pills. Note that some 1-10% of the DXM HBr in question will be
lost in the process of the extraction of the CPM, (varying with the amount of water and the skill of the operator),
so adjust your amounts accordingly. For 1050mg DXM (a mid-3rd plateau DXM dosage -- if this means nothing to you,
read William White's excellent DXM FAQ[1] -- for a 70kg person [i.e. your humble author]), 35 Coricidin pills would
be needed (yielding an extreme overdose of 140mg CPM). 10% of 1050 is 105, so use (rounding down) an additional 3
pills, yielding an extraction ranging from 945mg to 1039mg DXM. This is a high dosage, and not appropriate for beginners.
Please consult the FAQ for an appropriate dosing for your weight and experience, and use a similar procedure to calculate
the amount of Coricidin you need.
(2) Place the pills flat (i.e. not on top of one another) on a wide, sturdy
plate (the large rectangular ones you get at a cafeteria are perfect) and use a board, book, other plate, or some
other heavy instrument to crush them into a very fine powder. Make sure that there are NO large particles of pill
left, only very fine powder.
(3) Collect all the powder, and place it at the bottom of a flask or (for the equipment-impaired)
a glass. Pour in enough cold water to cover over the powder several times over -- the more water, the more perfect
of a CPM extraction you get, but also you will loose more DXM in the process.
(4) Stir the water slowly until
you get bored (a blender on a *VERY* slow setting might work, and a blender doesn't get bored), and let sit for a
few hours.
(5) Discard the water. This is not easy, as the powder will have the annoying tendency to go with the
water, and is far too small to be strained off. Evaporation will *NOT* work, as the CPM will be released back into
the powder mix. You need a very fine grain of cloth to do this (you can test it first with flour ... see if the flour
passes through when you pour water over it ... most garment cloth is okay).
(6) The remaining powder should be
DXM HBr, dyes, bindings, and other shit. Removing dyes and bindings can be easily done with petroleum ether, but for
most purposes it isn't really important. Fill gel caps and swallow or take in a different method. Read the FAQ, have
a safe trip.
- PRECAUTIONS -
(1) Bad things happen if the CPM doesn't get extracted.
Make fucking sure it does.
(2) Use a trip sitter at all times.
(3) Do not operate heavy machinery, drive,
or do anything dangerous.
(4) Obey all other precautions in the DXM FAQ.
(5) This procedure is *UNTESTED*,
and is sound as far as chemical theory goes, but neither the author nor to his knowledge anyone else has ingested
the product. DON'T be a guinea pig unless you understand the risks.
- CHEMICAL BACKGROUND -
Dextromethorphan
Hydrobromide is around 1.5% soluble in water. Chlorpheniramine Maleate is very soluble in water. Most dyes and binders
are soluble in ether. DXM ain't. 'Nuff said.

WARNINGS
· Products containing any active ingredients other than 'DXM' or 'Dextromethorphan' should not be used.
· High doses of Guaifenesin can cause severe nausea and vomiting.
· High doses of Acetaminophen can cause liver-damage and may be fatal. Some brands of DXM containing
cough-syrups, including Drixoral Cough and Fever contain acetaminophen.
· High doses of Chlorpheniramine Maleate can
cause severe and life-threatening symptoms including seizures, loss of consciousness, bleeding from skin, mouth, rectum, and
vagina, and possibly death. Some brands, including Coricidin Cough and Cold contain Chlorpheniramine maleate.
· Do not take DXM if you are using, or have used an MAO
Inhibitor <../maois/maois.shtml> within the
last 2 weeks.
· MAOI's include harmine & harmaline, as well as many anti-depressants.
· Check with a doctor if you're unsure whether you medication contains MAOI's.
· When combined with MAOI's, DXM can cause "serotonin syndrome" with fever,
hypertension, and arrhythmias.
· Nausea, stomach cramps, and other unpleasant
gastro-intestinal effects are common and may persist for days after use.
· Itching and other skin reactions have been reported.
· The large amount of glucose, thickeners, etc., present in many cough syrups may be hard on your kidneys and pancreas.
· Regular or frequent DXM use can lead to craving the experience and to emotional dependence.
Although not common, some people go on to use DXM daily and can find it difficult to quit.
· It is not yet established whether regular
use of DXM causes physical dependence (physical withdrawal symptoms upon stopping regular use). Some users report a 1-2 week
"hangover" period after stopping use which could suggest mild physical withdrawal. There is no
evidence of life-threatening health risks from withdrawal, but there is little data available on the subject.
· Regular users experience tolerance and require increased dosages to achieve the same level of effects.
· Olney's Lesions: The theory that DXM may cause this
type of brain lesioning is based on extrapolation from other NMDA agonist actions and is not considered definitive.

Extracting DXM HBr from Sucrets lozenges
Sucrets lozenges are a good and very cheap source of DXM. They can be hard to find, though. When you do find them, you
should be aware that they come in a blue bag, not in a tin (just as stated below). Each bag contains 20 lozenges with 15mg
of DXM in each lozenge. In total, each bag contains 300mg of DXM. Here is a method on how to extract DXM from these lozenges.
To extract DXM from Sucrets is very simple. First of all, you must make sure that you have the kind of sucrets that are
in the bag (they say dextromethrophan HBR) , and not the little tin. To extract, first you must crush up the sucrets (20 per
bag) and put them in a cup or bowl of warm water. Then put the cup into the microwave, and continualy let it go for 1 minute
intervals, stiring in-between, until the sucrets are totally dissolved. There should be a powdery looking substance on the
bottom of the cup or bowl. This is the DXM, because DXM Hbr is not water soluble. From here, you can do 1 of 2 things.
1. Siphon the excess water out of the cup/bowl leaving the powder behind. Then take the (probably wet) powder from the
cup and put it into a liquid (orange juice, etc..) and Drink UP!
2. Take the whole thing (water included) and dump it though a stack of coffee filters. Then take the coffee filters and
put them on a plate, and microwave it till the coffee filters are dry. Then crunch up/scrape etc.. until the now dry DXM falls
off the coffee filters. Now you can put the powder in empty caplets and swallow.
Woolah! you have pure DXM HBR
Note: This is not freebase, just the pure DXM Hbr powder.
Another method for extracting sucrets
What you need:
· 1 coffee filter
· 1 jar that has a smaller mouth than the coffee filters width
· 1 rubber band
· 1 12 inch x 12 inch sheet of tin foil
· 1 pot
· 2-3 cups of water (in the pot)
· 1 knife
· 2 bags of Sucrets cough drops (DXM is the only active ingredient)
· 10 empty gelcaps.
Procedure:
Place the pot on the stove ( on high ), and let sit until the water boils. Place all 40 of the cough drops in the boiling
water, and stir until disolved. When disolved, let the mixture sit for 5 min. Now pour off the water on the top part of the
pot, this should leave a white sludgy powder at the bottom ( with a little of red water). Dump the powder onto the tin foil
and place this in the sun to dry. Once this has dried you should have a redish powder on the tin foil. scrape this shit into
a bowl. Now you should have a somewhat fine redish powder in your bowl. Now all thats left is to take apart the capsules and
put the DXM into them. I recomend you take the eraser side of a pencil and pack the DXM into the pills REAL tight. This should
yield about 6-9 pills.
